Things that come up often#
The toolbar is not there.
Press Alt+Shift+A. If a tab was already open when you installed or updated the extension, that first keypress is what starts it on that page. Chrome also blocks extensions on its own pages — chrome:// addresses, the Web Store, and other extensions' pages — so nothing will appear on those, and there is no way around it.
My highlights vanished after a reload.
Highlights attach to the words they cover. If the page rewrote that text between visits — a news site that edits an article, an app that renders fresh content each time — the anchor no longer matches and the mark is dropped rather than being put somewhere wrong. Drawings, notes and comment pins are positional and are not affected.
A PDF opened in Chrome's viewer instead of this one.
The redirect looks at what the server says the file is. A page that serves a PDF inside its own frame, or a site that sends it as an attachment, will not be taken over. Right-click the link and choose Open PDF in Replayink.
Local PDFs do nothing.
Open chrome://extensions, find Replayink, and turn on Allow access to file URLs. Chrome keeps that switch off until you say otherwise.
My annotations are not on my other computer.
Annotations sync through Chrome's own profile sync, so both browsers have to be signed in to the same Google account with sync on. There is a 100 KB limit on what Chrome will sync; a page with more marks than that stays local and shows an indicator saying so. Recordings never sync — they are far too large — but you can export one as JSON and import it on the other machine.
A shortcut does nothing.
Single-key shortcuts only fire while the toolbar is visible and you are not typing in a field. The four that work regardless are managed by Chrome, not by the extension: change them at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Recording missed something.
Native browser dialogs, <select> dropdowns, other tabs your app opens and cross-origin iframes are not captured. Screenshots need the tab to be in front. Very large pages fall back to a screenshot for that step.
A recorded page plays back wrong.
Saved page copies run no JavaScript of their own — behaviour exists along the paths you actually used. A button you never clicked while recording does nothing. Canvas and WebGL content is captured as a still image.
Before you publish a recording#
Publishing uploads a copy of the pages you recorded, and to make them look right, the extension loads their images and stylesheets using your cookies for that site. A recording made inside a logged-in account can therefore contain things only you were meant to see.
Look through the recording first. If there is anything in it you would not put on a public web page, do not publish it — keep it in your library, or use More… → Download as JSON for a file you keep yourself, with nothing uploaded. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
Removing your data#
Uninstalling the extension removes everything stored locally, and so does Settings → Sync & data → Clear.
Unpublish in the recording player deletes a published recording, its uploaded files and its statistics, and the link stops working. To delete your account entirely, email the address above.
